Hoyo de Monterrey is paying homage to the brand’s post-embargo roots of Honduras by launching two new cigar blends: Hoyo de Monterrey Rojo and Hoyo de Monterrey Oscuro, both of medium and medium-plus strength. Most Hoyo cigars have been produced at the HATSA factory in Honduras since the brand migrated from Cuba in the mid-’60s. The Rojo and Oscuro cigars highlight Honduran tobaccos and craftsmanship and are rolled in the brand’s most popular sizes, priced for the everyday cigar enthusiast.
“The launch of these blends represents more than just new cigars. They are about honoring the brand’s deep-seated foundation in Honduras. As one of the first Cuban ex-pat brands available in the US, Hoyo de Monterrey laid the foundation for Honduran cigarmaking nearly 60 years ago and has become a living legend in the world of premium cigars. With the launch of ‘Rojo’ and ‘Oscuro,’ the brand’s journey is reflected in its commitment to balancing traditional Honduran craftsmanship against the handmade cigar category’s ever-changing tides,” said Senior Brand Manager Ed Lahmann.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Rojo features a red color scheme, with a Honduran wrapper from the Jamastran Valley, a Nicaraguan binder, and filler tobaccos from Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. The Hoyo de Monterrey Oscuro, on the other hand, has a black color scheme matching its darker wrapper, the Brazilian Mata Fina Oscuro. It is complimented by an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and fillers of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan tobacco. The Rojo is described as medium in body, while the Oscuro is noted as medium-plus.
Both versions have been rolled into three identical sizes:
- Gigante: 6” x 60 x 152 mm (6″), $8.49 per cigar
- Rothschild: 50 x 114 mm (4 1/2″), $5.99 per cigar
- Toro: 52 x 152 mm (6″), $7.49 per cigar
The cigars are packaged in 10-count boxes and expected to begin shipping to retailers this week.
